Behind the Name
Every great name has a story. Ours begins in Portsmouth, Virginia.
Cock Island Capital was founded in 2022 by J. Cameron Robinett, a proud Portsmouth native with deep roots in Hampton Roads. For Cameron, choosing a name was never simply about branding. It was about honoring the place that shaped him, the people who influenced him, and the values that continue to guide our firm today.
The inspiration for our name comes from one of Portsmouth's most distinctive and enduring traditions: the legendary Race to Cock Island.
Founded in 1987, the annual sailing regatta was created to bring competitive yacht racing back to Portsmouth while showcasing the city's maritime heritage, hospitality, and waterfront culture. What began as a local event quickly grew into one of the largest sailing competitions on the Chesapeake Bay, attracting hundreds of boats and participants from across the region. Over time, it became more than a race. It became a symbol of community, competition, and local pride.
The race also holds personal significance for Cameron. His father, Ward Robinett, served on the inaugural Cock Island Race committee, helping bring the event to life during its formative years. Growing up, Cameron became familiar not only with the race itself, but also with the entrepreneurial spirit, camaraderie, and sense of community that surrounded it.
To understand the inspiration behind our firm's name, however, it helps to understand the story behind the race's name.
When organizers established the Race to Cock Island, they drew inspiration from a long-standing Portsmouth nickname. Historical references dating back to the 19th century identify Portsmouth as "Cock Island," including an 1850 map that labeled a ferry route as "Ferry to Cock Island–Portsmouth." Other accounts point to Portsmouth's historical association with the sport of cockfighting and the colorful character of the city's early waterfront culture. Whatever its precise origin, the nickname became a distinctive part of Portsmouth's local identity and folklore.
As the race grew in popularity, the gamecock emerged as its enduring symbol. The image provided a natural connection to Portsmouth's historic nickname while representing qualities that have long been admired both on the water and in business: resilience, confidence, adaptability, determination, and a competitive spirit.
When Cameron founded Cock Island Capital, the name felt like a natural fit. It honored a local tradition that had been part of his family's story, reflected the maritime heritage of his hometown, and embodied values that continue to shape our approach to serving clients.
Today, Cock Island Capital is headquartered in Suffolk, Virginia, remaining deeply connected to the broader Hampton Roads community that has shaped our identity from the beginning.
The waterways that define our region are subtly incorporated into the feathers of our gamecock logo, representing the rivers, harbors, and channels that have shaped life throughout Tidewater for generations. They have fueled commerce, created opportunity, connected communities, and helped define the character of Southeastern Virginia. To us, they symbolize perspective, discipline, and the importance of maintaining a steady course through changing market and economic conditions.
The story behind our name is ultimately a story about heritage, values, and purpose. It honors the Portsmouth traditions that inspired it, the Tidewater region that shaped it, and the principles that guide us. Those influences remain woven into our identity, connecting our history to the work we do every day.
